The style is pretty universal, and one of the incarnations is sure to suit; it will just depend on how the dress is proportioned to your body shape. Like the empire line, this style is elongating on a petite frame, and the waist emphasis can help define a shapely figure. If you have great legs then the hemline can rise as far as a minidress for the daring, or drop to the floor in a train for the more traditional. Remember, you can add height with heels under floor-length dresses, but beware of heel fatigue by the end of the day if you are not used to wearing them.
FABRICS
If you are emphasizing the simplicity of the style then more structural silks like duchesse satin, grosgrain, shantung or damask work well. Strapless styles may use contrast on the bodice, either in lace or beaded and embroidered details, or with a matte fabric that contrasts with a lustrous skirt. Sheer organza and laces layered over supporting base fabrics work well, and softer layers of voile, chiffon and even silk, viscose and wool jersey are options for a more fluid or draped silhouette.
