Little Girl's Hairstyles - Side Stuffed Bun 5 min

I was just lamenting to a reader about how I send my older girl off to school most days with 'boring hair', since there usually is just NOT enough time in the morning to do the fun hair I'd like to do. So, since I know many of you are sending your girls off to school in the mornings, just like me, I want to show some of our faves. Fast and easy! Tip: These are all the do's found in my 3-5 min label.

Here's one of our faves: My oldest girl usually requests this, since she's really into any do on the 'side'. So here's a side stuffed bun. I got the gorgeous flower from Flowerz In Her Hair.

I usually side part the hair, or angle part it, and after thoroughly spraying the hair with water, I comb it all over behind her ear, on the largest side of the part.

Do a stuffed bun or do a messy bun, which is what I have to do now with her hair, due to the length. I like to put in a big flower or bow above it, and they are finished! It's also a good idea to put a few snap barrettes in the back, since there will usually be some flyaways escaping. You are done, and she has time to eat breakfast!

Little Girl's Hairstyles -Double twist braids with soft tousled waves 3-5 min

This is what I did with her hair the day after I did the corkscrew curls with the pull through ponys (see post).

We like to call this her mermaid hair, so she sported her Ariel swimsuit for the occasion.

To start, I used the same part from the pull through ponys, and finger combed it down, since I didn't want to pull out the curls.

I parted off two ponys, like this, leaving one small. This will be for your twist braids. I also sprayed hairspray on the pieces before I combed them into ponys, to smooth up the little baby hairs.

I did twist braids on both ponys, securing them down with a bobby pin until I was ready to join them in the other pony. See the label 'twist braid' to learn how to do these. Since the hair was dry, and harder to handle than when it's wet, I sprayed each section again with hairspray to make them stay in place as I was twisting the braids.

I parted off the rest of the larger side, and pulled in the two twist braids.

Here's another super fast option after sleeping in the corkscrew curls. Smooth down from the initial part, spray with a little hairspray, and stick in a headband. This is always her first choice for a hair style!

Little Girl's Hairstyles -Stuffed Buns 3-5 min

I just made this name up--and realized it sounds like something to eat. Funny. Probably because this is my most favorite thing to do on my girls' hair. It's really fast and easy, it stays in well, and I think it's super cute. My good friend showed me this, and I think it's such a handy trick.

Top view

I like to do an angle part to start with, but a side or center part works great too. Again, damp hair (and gel if you prefer) is what I start with.

After parting the top, I part down the middle in the back, using my thumb to get it in the middle (like in my older posts). I also spray the part and comb it away from the center here to keep stray hairs from the other side from getting in when I'm putting it up.

Here's where I get a little picky about combing the hair. I don't know if you can see the difference between how the hair looks in this picture and the one below, but I like it combed really smooth. I use the big teeth on the comb to comb the hair up from the base of the neck, so it doesn't pull on that sensitive area, but after it's combed up, I flip the comb around and use the small teeth to get it really even.

Put in your elastic and pull the last time through only halfway, leaving a long tail. This will only work well on longer hair. If you don't have enough of a tail to make another loop the same size as the first, it won't look right. See where I have my finger under the elastic here? This is where you lift it and stuff the hair back in.

After stuffing in ends.

After getting it stuffed in, you can pull and adjust the hair to make it not look like just two double loops (unless that's what you prefer).

Side-spray well with hairspray, and put in snap barrettes in the back if you have shorter hair back there to hold in place.

This is really cute with bows placed right in front of the buns. This one was going outside to play in the sandbox so we opted no on the bows. This is how I do my girls' hair most days when they are just running around outside or playing. Thanks M.T. for this super trick!

Little Girl's Hairstyles -Small puffy braid 5 min

This picture is not the best for showing off the hair style, but it was the best I could get at the time. That's what happens when your model is 3 and full of sassafras.

This is what we started with. She had slept in the 2 side twists and braid (see previous post) and since she's always begging to leave her hair down, I decided to do this, since you don't have to get the hair wet, and it works well when you want to leave the rest down.

I used 5 elastics for this style. I first parted it on the side. I left it dry, but to get all those little fly away pieces around her face, I lightly sprayed the pieces with hairspray, and then combed them. To begin, part off a square section of hair.

Secure it with an elastic, keeping the pony to the far outer edge of the square. Then part off another square, but enlarging it on both sides evenly.  Secure with elastic, again to the outer corner.

Part off a third section, and repeat. I left a small section over her ear. I just prefer how this looks when you are leaving the rest of the hair down. I think it blends in better.

Finished first side.

Repeat on other side, but only with two sections.

I combed through her wavy hair with just my fingers, and sprayed very lightly with hairspray. You can't see the front from this angle, but I thought it showed how the front sectioning didn't take away from the back.

The goofy grin again along with the finished ponys. Since I used all different colored elastics, I didn't use any bows, but they do look cute with this style too. Of course, because bows are cute on little girls. Big bows. The bigger the better I say.

Little Girl's Hairstyles - Bobby pin rolls 3-5 min

This style is really great on curly, short, or thin hair. If you have any cute bobby pins with flowers or gems on the end, this style is perfect for showing them off. If you do enough rolls, then it looks like they have a crown of flowers/gems. These are fast and easy. I do these on myself often as well. You'll need a bobby pin for each roll you plan on doing. I did three in this picture.

For this style, I started with wet hair, and did an angle part. You can part straight too, I just prefer the angle. On the larger side of the part, I parted off another section, about 2 inches wide.

Start twisting hair away from part. Start base of twist towards front of head, and pull it towards front of head, until you have a twist about 2 inches long. Giving your subject pretzels and parking them in front of the tv helps a great deal too.

Start laying twist down away from part, and the closer you get to the head, incorporate the hair on that side into twist.

Tuck the hair, in this case, on the left side, into the twist, until it's nice and tight and laying down, about 2 inches long. This can take some redoing, just keep trying until it looks about like this.

This is where you want to grab your bobby pin and open it. I like to use the longer flat edge on the side that's fattest, in this case, the right side, and the bumpy shorter edge on the less thick side, or left side here.

This shows how to position it. You'll have to enlarge this one to see it better. Lay the pin down flat to the head, and put one tip just to the right of the roll, and the other on the other side, so the pin straddles the roll. Push the pin in all the way, keeping it covered under the hair. This too can be tricky, so just readjust as necessary. It also helps to have bobby pins that closely match the hair color, as it will disguise it better.

This is what it should look like after you get the pin all the way in.

I parted off another section on that same side, using the same width as the first one. You can see that leaves some hair over the ear. The hair down by the ear is usually too sparse to roll, so I leave it. You'll have the same on the other side.

I do one roll on the others side of the part. This time I roll the opposite way, but again away from the part.

All three rolls finished. I decided to pull the rest of her hair back into a low pony to finish it. You can leave the hair down as well. This style is really great on curly, short, or thin hair. If you have any cute bobby pins with flowers or gems on the end, this style is perfect for showing them off. If you do enough rolls, then it looks like they have a crown of flowers/gems. This is a versatile, basic style, that you can incorporate into many hair dos.

With ponytail. Pretzels are finished.

Little Girl's Hairstyles - Full side twist- 3 to 5 min

This is fairly easy and quick and works well on shorter hair as long. Here's both girls with twists.

First, you'll need only 1-2 elastics, depending on how you'd like to finish the hair, and a comb. I like to have all the hair damp--I use a spray bottle and spray it well, on top and underneath, since you'll be pulling the hair underneath up. Part hair into slant, and comb down smooth. Having the hair damp will keep the hair smooth and help stray pieces stay in longer.
Part off small section, about inch deep, and split hair into equal parts. You'll be twisting bottom piece up over the top.
This shows the first section of hair that you'll incorporate into the twist. First twist the two pieces around each other, and then after a full twist, then bring the first section in. I'm holding all 3 here so you can see them clearly, but I do not bring in the left section until after the right and middle are twisted around once.

Continue to bring up sections and twist in, just like you do when french braiding. To keep the top of the hair from bunching, periodically comb it down, and keep the twist tight, close to the head.
I like to use my pinky on my right hand to part the hair I bring up in the twist, but whatever works best for you!

This is where I stop the twist--right above the ear. I then comb back the hair that's left in the front and make it smooth, and pull it into the twist.

It should look like this once all the hair is in. Keeping it tight, this is where you put in your elastic.

To make the stuffed bun on the side, after securing the hair in the elastic, on the last pass through, I pull the hair only thru halfway.

I then fold the tail up and over.

and stuff it back into the elastic. You can pull on the hair after it's secured to adjust and make it look even.

If your girl's hair is too short for the bun, you can leave it in a ponytail, or braid it down. I spray with hair spray to keep it in. Clip in a bow or flower on top. Side and back view. All done (and so was she!)
